Utah's Waters Revealed Unprecedented Trophies in 2025, But Are These Records Truly Unbreakable?
The year 2025 may be behind us, but for five lucky anglers, it's a year they'll never forget. Utah's lakes and reservoirs surrendered some truly remarkable catches, shattering five state fishing records, according to the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources, the guardians of these aquatic achievements for over a century.
And this is the part most people miss: Two of these records were achieved through catch-and-release, proving that trophy hunting and conservation can go hand in hand.
Jesse Pashia, a name now etched in Utah fishing lore, landed a whopping 14-inch white crappie at Gunnison Bend Reservoir in February, besting his own record set just a month prior with a 13 3/8-inch catch from the same location. Adam Cunningham joined the record books with a 29.5-inch wiper from Huntington North Reservoir in May, showcasing the diversity of Utah's fisheries.
But here's where it gets controversial: William Stafford's 29.5-inch wiper, weighing a hefty 18 pounds and 1.5 ounces, from Otter Creek Reservoir, sparked debates about the ethics of keeping such impressive specimens. Chris Anderson added another catch-and-keep record with a 12 5/8-inch, 1-pound, 1-ounce hybrid sunfish from Sand Hollow Reservoir, highlighting the surprising variety of Utah's fish species.
Spearfishing enthusiasts weren't left out either. Garion Rowett made a splash at Fish Lake, spearing a 10.5-inch arctic grayling weighing 4.16 ounces, a testament to the unique opportunities Utah's waters offer.
With these new additions, Utah boasts an impressive 107 fishing records across various categories. Seven records fell in 2024, and six the year before, demonstrating the state's thriving fisheries.
Aspiring record-breakers take note: The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources welcomes submissions for 2026. Catch-and-release records require a photo of the fish alongside a measuring device and a written witness statement. Catch-and-keep records demand even more scrutiny, including girth measurements, certified scale weights, and verification from two independent witnesses not part of the angler's party. "Tracking record fish," she explains, "not only recognizes anglers' achievements but also encourages exploration of Utah's stunning outdoors and the thrill of encountering its magnificent fish."
