The travel plans of hundreds of thousands of passengers have been upended, forcing them to seek alternative transportation. Car rental companies have reported an increase in demand, and there has been a surge in private jet flights as well.
However, the Federal Aviation Administration has now begun limiting private aviation flights at certain U.S. airports, adding to the strain on the system.
Air traffic controllers, who are still required to work despite missing their second paycheck, are under immense pressure. Some have taken second jobs to make ends meet, as the shutdown drags on.
"The added stress leads to fatigue, and fatigue erodes safety," said Nick Daniels, president of the National Air Traffic Controllers Association.
