In a striking assertion that captures the ongoing tensions in U.S. politics, California Governor Gavin Newsom expressed his hope that President Donald Trump won't "double down on stupid" during his upcoming address at the World Economic Forum in Davos. This statement comes amid concerns that recent declines in the stock market could prompt Trump to reconsider his aggressive stance on international issues, including his controversial threats to take control of Greenland from Denmark.
In an exclusive interview with POLITICO, Newsom speculated that the financial turmoil might lead Trump to adopt a more diplomatic approach when addressing European leaders about Greenland. He emphasized that the most compelling parts of Trump’s speech would likely be those not scripted on his teleprompter, suggesting that external influences, such as media reports from outlets like Fox News, could sway Trump's words while he travels.
"I believe the only factor that might influence Trump’s behavior today is the state of the markets," Newsom remarked, expressing hope that the president would avoid making imprudent remarks. He recalled how previous market reactions had caused Trump to soften his stance on global tariffs following a significant announcement last April that had unsettled investors.
"It’s important to remember that fluctuations in the stock market affect everyone who accompanies him on Air Force One, including influential figures like Howard Lutnick and Steve Witkoff, as well as Trump himself. That’s what fundamentally matters to him," Newsom explained.
Throughout January, Trump has intensified his rhetoric surrounding Greenland—a vast Arctic territory governed by Denmark. His threats risk straining transatlantic relations to their limits, prompting European leaders to scramble for strategies to persuade him to back off. Over the weekend, Trump even announced his intent to impose tariffs on nations attempting to thwart his ambitions regarding the territory.
While Newsom attended the Davos forum, he made it clear that he wasn’t there to position himself as a leading opponent of Trump, despite being considered a potential candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2028. "I’m here to present an alternative perspective. Trump is a historically significant president, yet his popularity is at an all-time low. It’s crucial for people here to grasp that reality," Newsom stated. He noted that Trump’s policies appear widely unpopular across various political factions in the United States, highlighting that even by his own standards, Trump’s approval ratings have dipped lower than they were during his earlier term.
During his conversation with POLITICO at the Davos Congress Centre, Newsom elaborated on the deteriorating relationship he has experienced with Trump, recalling a time when they had a more amicable rapport. "Things took a turn for the worse when he started resorting to childish taunts, calling me ‘Newscum.’ That certainly didn’t help our relationship," Newsom remarked.
He continued, saying, "Trump has declared war on California. Interestingly, we had a productive partnership during the COVID-19 pandemic, which no other Democratic governor can claim. However, his decision to federalize the National Guard and send 700 active-duty Marines to Los Angeles crossed a line."
Newsom criticized Trump for his failure to provide disaster relief for Californians affected by wildfires, stating, "He hasn’t done anything significant for Los Angeles."
The governor also pointed out that California has become a focal point for Trump’s attention, largely due to its prominence in technologies like quantum computing and artificial intelligence, as well as the personal ties that many of Trump's associates and family members have to the state.
