Two Plus One Students' Tragic Drowning: A Warning from the Sea
Kollam, India: A heart-wrenching incident unfolded on Kollam's Paravur Beach, where two young students, Bibin Raj and Kannan Raj, aged 16, met their untimely end while swimming. The tragedy occurred on a fateful Saturday afternoon, as a group of five boys ventured near the beach, behind the Pozhikkara Devi Temple, to take a dip in the sea. Three of them, Bibin, Kannan, and another boy, entered the water, only to be swept away by the powerful currents.
The survivor, Abu Tahir, was rescued through a heroic effort by the Fire and Rescue Services and the police. However, Bibin and Kannan's bodies remained missing, prompting an extensive search operation that continued until late into the night. The Coast Guard joined the efforts, but the strong currents and the vast expanse of the sea made the search challenging.
The estuary behind the temple is notorious for its dangerous waters, and locals often advise against swimming there. On this day, the three boys were holding hands when the currents pulled them under. The survivor, Abu, was fortunate to be trapped in the sand near the estuary, allowing rescuers to reach him in time.
The bodies of Bibin and Kannan were eventually found early on Sunday, bringing an end to the extensive search operations. The tragic incident has sparked a conversation about the dangers of swimming in such areas and the importance of heeding local warnings. The post-mortem examinations, scheduled for Monday, will provide closure for the families and a chance to honor the lives of these young students.
