According to the New York Post’s Jon Heyman, Boston sits among a trio of teams with “big interest” in the corner infielder, joining the Toronto Blue Jays and Pittsburgh Pirates. The Athletic’s Jim Bowden added a closely related note, linking Okamoto to a broader list of potential suitors that includes the Red Sox, Pirates, Arizona Diamondbacks, San Diego Padres, Colorado Rockies, Washington Nationals, and New York Mets. This indicates significant buzz around Okamoto’s free-agent pursuit.
Okamoto, 29, recently completed a decade-long career in Japan and is navigating the MLB free-agent market with a deadline of January 4 to negotiate with interested teams.
During his Nippon Professional Baseball tenure with the Yomiuri Giants, Okamoto split time between first base and third base. He posted a robust slash line of .277/.361/.521, along with 248 home runs, 212 doubles, and 717 RBIs. Notably, he reached 100+ games played in every season from 2016 through 2024, before missing time in 2025 due to an elbow injury.
The Red Sox currently face questions at both corner infield spots. Boston is weighing options to retain Alex Bregman, a move that has been a recurring topic of conversation, and has also been linked to multiple players who could potentially fill Triston Casas’s role as the team evaluates its infield future.
