Rangers Recall Jaroslav Chmelař: What It Means for the Team & Brennan Othmann's AHL Assignment (2025)

Big changes are happening in the New York Rangers organization! In a strategic move, the team has shuffled its forward lineup, rewarding a rising star while giving another a chance to hone their skills.

On Sunday, the Rangers made a notable roster adjustment. They recalled forward Jaroslav Chmelar from their AHL affiliate, the Hartford Wolf Pack. Simultaneously, they assigned forward Brennan Othmann to Hartford.

Here's the breakdown:

  • Jaroslav Chmelar: Called up from the Hartford Wolf Pack.
  • Brennan Othmann: Assigned to the Hartford Wolf Pack.

Chmelar's promotion comes after a blazing start with the Wolf Pack. In just nine games, he's racked up two goals and three assists, totaling five points, which ties him for third on the team. He's found a groove on the top line, playing alongside Gabe Perreault and Justin Dowling. Their chemistry was on full display in a recent game against the Charlotte Checkers, where they combined for three goals and four assists in a dominant 4-1 victory for the Wolf Pack. Chmelar himself contributed two assists in that game and has a solid four points (1 G, 3 A) in his last three games.

Chmelar, a 6'5" winger, was a 5th-round draft pick (#144) in 2021 from Providence College. He's known for his impressive speed and strength, making him a force on the forecheck. He uses his speed to drive to the net and create scoring opportunities, and his forechecking helps his line control the offensive zone. In his 87 career regular-season games with the Wolf Pack, Chmelar has recorded 36 points (16 G, 20 A). He's also added two goals and an assist in ten career Calder Cup Playoff games. If he gets into a game, he'll become the second Wolf Pack alumni to debut for the Rangers this season, following Noah Laba.

Othmann, on the other hand, played in one game with the Rangers after being recalled on October 24th. In that game, a 5-1 loss to the Calgary Flames on October 26th, he had one shot on goal and was a -1 in 12:36 of ice time. Having been a healthy scratch for the last three games, the move to Hartford provides Othmann with valuable ice time. He's likely to step into Chmelar's spot in Hartford's top six. In 98 regular-season AHL games, Othmann has tallied 70 points (33 G, 37 A). He's also recorded an additional five points (1 G, 4 A) in ten Calder Cup Playoff games. In 26 NHL games, Othmann has recorded two assists.

But here's where it gets controversial... Is this the right move for both players? Some might argue that Othmann, with his proven AHL scoring ability, could benefit from more NHL experience. Others will say that Chmelar's hot streak demands a shot at the big leagues.

The Rangers will next take the ice on Tuesday, November 4th, at Madison Square Garden against the Carolina Hurricanes. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 pm. The Wolf Pack will return to action on Friday, November 7th, visiting the Laval Rocket, with puck drop set for 7:00 pm.
