A Royal Wedding Anniversary: A Photographer's Perspective
As Princess Eugenie and her husband, Jack Brooksbank, celebrate their seventh wedding anniversary, we're taking a closer look at the magical day through the lens of their photographer. But here's where it gets interesting - it's not just any photographer, it's Sandra von Riekhoff, the talented Canadian-born artist who captured those intimate, behind-the-scenes moments.
On this special milestone, Sandra shared a rare glimpse into the princess' wedding day. The photo, taken as Eugenie rode in a Bentley en route to St. George's Chapel at Windsor, showcases her breathtaking bridal gown. Designed by Peter Pilotto and Christopher de Vos, the gown featured a low V-shaped back, a graceful neckline, and a full skirt, all embellished with the White Rose of York, a nod to her parents, the Duke and Duchess of York.
But the story doesn't end there. Eugenie also wore the stunning Greville Emerald Kokoshnik tiara, an incredible heirloom piece crafted in Paris with a 1920s Art Deco design. The central emerald is a remarkable 93.7 carats, adding an extra touch of glamour to the royal wedding.
While Alex Bramall was the official photographer, Sandra's role was to capture these private, sentimental moments. She previously spoke to HELLO! about the challenges and rewards of her unique position.
"Everyone hates having their picture taken! Building trust is key. I worked on a high-profile wedding with numerous NDAs, and one key person was particularly reluctant to be photographed," Sandra shared, referring to Eugenie and Jack's wedding. "I was warned in advance, so I had to use my charm and conversation skills to put them at ease. Having a likeable, people-friendly photographer is crucial for such situations."
Sandra's approach clearly impressed the princess. "Eugenie sent me a beautiful note afterward, complimenting my ability to connect with people and match their energy," Sandra revealed. "Whether it's a royal wedding or not, a photographer needs to be sensitive, light-hearted, and know when to talk and when to remain silent. It's all about being a sensitive and adaptable person."
And this is the part most people miss: the importance of a photographer's personality and approach in capturing those special, unguarded moments. So, as we celebrate Princess Eugenie and Jack's anniversary, let's also appreciate the art and skill of wedding photography, and the unique perspective it offers.
