The St. Louis Blues have secured a key player for the next six years with the signing of Philip Broberg. The 24-year-old defenseman, who has been a standout for the Blues this season, has just signed a lucrative six-year, $48 million contract. This deal, averaging $8 million annually, will keep Broberg with the team through the prime of his career.
Broberg's journey to the Blues began when the Edmonton Oilers failed to match an offer sheet tendered by the Blues on August 13th, 2024. This move made him a restricted free agent, and the Blues quickly signed him to a two-year, $9.16 million contract, with an average annual value of $4.58 million. His performance this season, with 14 points in 44 games, has solidified his role as a cornerstone player for the Blues.
Blues general manager Doug Armstrong praised Broberg's contributions, stating, 'He's been one of the few bright lights in a season that hasn't gone the way we expected. He's a player on the back end I think we can build around.' Broberg's performance last season, which included career-highs in games played, goals, assists, and points, further cements his importance to the team.
Looking ahead, Armstrong believes Broberg will take on a more significant role in the power play and penalty kill. He says, 'He touches right now our penalty kill, our 5-on-5 play, getting incorporated a little more into the power play, which I think he will take a bigger chunk of that as time goes on.'
Broberg's NHL career began with the Edmonton Oilers, who drafted him in the first round (No. 8) of the 2019 NHL Draft. In 194 regular-season games, he has accumulated 56 points, including 12 goals and 44 assists. His playoff experience is also notable, with five points in 27 playoff games.
The Blues, currently sitting at 17-20-8, will face the Vegas Golden Knights on Saturday at 10 p.m. ET. This game promises to be an exciting test for the team, and Broberg's performance will undoubtedly be a key factor in their success.
