Lightning strikes again! Nadi International Airport experienced a temporary shutdown of its landing lights, causing a ripple effect of flight diversions. This incident highlights the critical importance of reliable airport infrastructure.
Initially, the situation led to several flight disruptions. Fiji Airways flight FJ950, originating from Canberra, was initially rerouted to Nausori Airport. However, according to flight tracking data, it later returned and successfully landed at Nadi International Airport.
Other flights were also affected. For example, FJ910 was diverted to Apia, as was FJ262 from Port Vila. Furthermore, FJ960 from Adelaide was redirected to Nausori Airport, FJ274 from Tonga also went to Nausori, Virgin Australia flight VA179 was diverted to Noumea, and Fiji Airways flight FJ460 ended up in Apia.
But here's where it gets controversial... Two departing flights were also impacted. FJ413, a Fiji Airways flight to Auckland scheduled for an 8:00 PM departure, was delayed, finally taking off at 8:45 PM. Meanwhile, FJ915, bound for Sydney, was canceled altogether.
The root cause? A lightning strike that occurred between 2:00 PM and 3:00 PM on a transmitter, leading to a system failure. This issue was discovered during a routine night inspection at 7:15 PM.
Fortunately, the Fiji Airports technical team responded quickly, restoring the lighting system by 8:30 PM.
Fiji Airports issued an apology to the affected passengers. They emphasized that the safety of passengers, their families, airline partners, and flight crews remains their utmost priority.
