Norfolk's Youth Mental Health Crisis: A New Initiative
Norfolk's youth mental health crisis has reached an alarming state, with one in five children experiencing anxiety or emotional distress, according to NHS statistics. To address this issue, broadcaster Jake Humphrey has launched a free education program called Game Plan, which focuses on six key areas, including staying positive and handling pressure. The program aims to improve mental resilience and provide young people with the tools to face life's challenges with confidence.
Humphrey, a former sports presenter and resident of Norfolk, has transferred his 'life lesson' podcast interviews into a resource available to secondary schools. He believes that by implementing Game Plan, the mental strength of young people can be significantly improved. The program's success in schools has already demonstrated its effectiveness in enhancing mental resilience.
Humphrey's charity, High Performance Foundation, was established after he launched a podcast series of the same name in 2020. Each episode features 'elite performers' from various fields, exploring the psychology and behaviors behind sustained high performance. This year, the charity conducted research among almost 4,000 children and teenagers, revealing that East Anglia is one of the worst areas in the country for mental strength.
Humphrey emphasizes the importance of investing in Norfolk's youth, stating that access to youth clubs, help, care, and fun activities in the community is crucial. He also highlights the need for young people to have the ability to access opportunities and resources, such as buses to Norwich, to prevent feelings of isolation and struggle.
By implementing Game Plan and investing in the community, Humphrey aims to make a positive impact on the mental health of Norfolk's youth and provide them with the necessary support to thrive.
