Incredible 9-Year-Old Deadlifts World Record | Jackson Mackay's Journey (2026)

A Nine-Year-Old's Amazing Journey: Breaking World Records and Inspiring Confidence

Imagine a young boy, just nine years old, lifting weights with such determination that he breaks a world record! Jackson Mackay's story is an extraordinary one, and it all started with a simple goal to boost his confidence.

In a remarkable turn of events, Jackson, a fourth-grade student from the Sunshine Coast, has set his sights on a second world record deadlift title. This ambitious goal comes just 18 months after he first stepped into a gym and discovered his passion for weightlifting.

But here's where it gets controversial... In January, Jackson achieved something incredible. He lifted an astonishing 80 kilograms, shattering the previous record of 72 kilograms. His achievement was verified by Kids World Records, who awarded him the Heaviest Deadlift Title in the 7-9-year-old category. An incredible feat, right?

Jackson's journey began with a sudden desire to achieve something big. He explained, "I just woke up one day and thought, 'Gyms are for weights, so why not break a world record?'" With this mindset, he embarked on a dedicated training regimen, putting in three hours of work each week for a year and a half.

Initially, Jackson used a hex bar to build his core stability, but it was with a standard straight bar that he claimed his record-breaking lift. The moment he achieved his goal was an emotional one, not just for him but for his entire support system.

"My parents were jumping with excitement, and I could see the pride and joy in their eyes. Even my mum shed a few tears," Jackson shared.

His mother, Cara Mackay, couldn't hide her amazement. "A year ago, Jackson set this goal and wrote it down. Seeing him achieve it was simply amazing. I felt incredibly proud as his mother," she said.

Joshua Hodges, Jackson's strength and conditioning coach, witnessed the moment firsthand. "It was really special. I felt a little emotional too. Jackson's joy was palpable, and seeing Cara's reaction was heartwarming. I felt honored to be a part of this moment Jackson had been working towards," Mr. Hodges recalled.

Mr. Hodges, who has been training Jackson since October 2024, revealed that the young athlete was initially drawn to weightlifting for its social aspect after leaving rugby league. "We discovered he was quite strong for his age and very determined. He came to me to rebuild his self-confidence, and since then, his confidence has grown, and he's even gotten back into team sports," he explained.

And this is the part most people miss... Jackson's success in the gym may be linked to his pursuit of other sports like rugby league, wakeboarding, and motocross. Daniel Van Den Hoek, a sports and exercise scientist from the University of the Sunshine Coast, believes that engaging in multiple sports can benefit children later on when they specialize.

"We see this at the elite levels of Australian sport. Athletes who have played multiple sports develop new skills and knowledge about their bodies, which they can apply to different sports. As a child, participating in diverse sports programs is highly beneficial," Dr. Van Den Hoek said.

So, what's next for Jackson? He's already setting his sights on a new goal: breaking the 10-year-old deadlift record. With his determination and the support of his coaches and family, who knows what heights he'll reach?

This story not only highlights the incredible achievements of young athletes but also the power of supervised weightlifting for children and adolescents. It's a reminder that with the right guidance and a positive mindset, anything is possible.
