Get ready, EastEnders fans, because a blast from the past is about to hit Albert Square! This Christmas, the soap is pulling out all the stops with a major character return, but not in the way you might expect. Instead of festive ghosts, we're diving into a poignant storyline.
Earlier this year, we saw the return of Nigel Bates, and now we know he's battling dementia. As his condition worsens this December, he'll be visited by familiar faces from his past.
We already knew that the legendary Pam St. Clement would be reprising her role as Pat. Now, prepare yourselves... Shaun Williamson is joining her!
Yes, you read that right: Barry from EastEnders is back!
Barry's dramatic exit on January 2, 2004, remains one of the soap's most memorable moments. His wife, Janine, pushed him off a cliff after marrying him for his money.
Do you remember Janine's iconic line, blaming Barry's footwear? "If only he'd worn slip-on shoes!"
Barry and his step-mum, Pat, didn't always see eye to eye, especially since Barry blamed her for his father's death.
But this special episode will see these imagined versions put aside their differences to support Nigel during his difficult time.
Shaun Williamson, who has appeared as a fictionalised version of himself in Extras and performs across the UK doing 'Barrioke,' shared his excitement: "It was a complete shock getting the call to go back to Albert Square, but so exciting!" He admitted to feeling nervous returning to the set of The Queen Victoria, but loved working with old friends.
The soap's boss, Ben Wadey, added: "I'm delighted to welcome Shaun Williamson back to EastEnders for Nigel's special episode."
But here's where it gets controversial... Could this be seen as a way to capitalize on nostalgia, or is it a respectful way to explore the emotional impact of dementia?
EastEnders airs Mondays through Thursdays at 7:30 PM on BBC One, and streams on BBC iPlayer, with most episodes available early at 6 AM.
