Comac: China's Rising Star in the Aviation Industry (2026)

A bold new player is emerging in the skies above Asia-Pacific, and it's time to talk about Comac, the Chinese planemaker taking on the aviation giants Boeing and Airbus.

In the bustling exhibition halls of the Singapore Airshow, Comac's booth stands out, showcasing its vision for the future of aviation. With its C919 passenger jet, Comac aims to challenge the dominance of Airbus and Boeing in the world's fastest-growing aviation market.

But here's where it gets controversial: Comac's ambition extends beyond China's borders, targeting markets across Asia-Pacific and even Europe.

"I believe Comac will become a global competitor, but it's a journey," says Willie Walsh, Director General of the International Air Transport Association (IATA). "In a decade or two, we'll be talking about Boeing, Airbus, and Comac as equals."

The need for a new player in Asia-Pacific is evident. Airlines in the region are facing delivery delays and supply chain bottlenecks, with a shortage of engines and uncertainty over tariffs adding to their woes.

IATA data reveals that global carriers are waiting longer than ever for new aircraft, increasing operating costs and straining their resources.

"It's a frustrating wait of up to seven years between ordering and delivery," Walsh adds.

This is where Comac steps in, offering an alternative for Asia-Pacific airlines. With over 150 jets in active service within China and operations in Laos, Indonesia, and Vietnam, Comac is gaining traction. Brunei's GallopAir has placed a significant order, and Cambodia is set to follow suit.

Subhas Menon, Director General of the Association for Asia Pacific Airlines (AAPA), emphasizes the need for more suppliers: "The supply chain is an oligopoly, and we've been waiting for this shift. Comac's arrival is a welcome change."

Comac's strong government support and competitive pricing make its aircraft an attractive option for budget airlines in emerging markets.

"We embrace competition, and Comac's certification process is a step towards that. In the 2030s, we expect Comac to offer an appealing choice," says Mike Szucs, CEO of Cebu Pacific, a low-cost carrier in the Philippines.

But the road to global recognition is not without challenges. Comac's pursuit of European certification is a lengthy process, potentially taking until 2028 or even 2031. Harmonizing Chinese and Western parts, flight controls, and software presents technical hurdles for international orders.

Additionally, establishing maintenance and repair infrastructure and pilot training systems is essential, areas where Boeing and Airbus have a significant head start.

And in Asia-Pacific, Comac faces competition from Embraer, the Brazilian planemaker, which has secured orders from Singapore's Scoot, Virgin Australia, and Japan's All Nippon Airlines (ANA).

Despite these challenges, Boeing and Airbus remain strong at the Singapore Airshow and across the region. They assure local carriers that delivery delays, a long-standing frustration, are improving.

"We're seeing a light at the end of the tunnel," Szucs of Cebu Pacific confirms.

However, questions remain about Comac's order numbers. While it claims over 1,000 C919 orders from Chinese airlines, only a dozen have been delivered so far. Verifying these numbers is challenging as Comac is a state-owned entity, unlike the publicly listed Boeing and Airbus.

Unless Comac addresses these issues, Boeing and Airbus are likely to maintain their dominance above Asia-Pacific. But with the right strategies and continued support, Comac could reshape the aviation landscape, offering a fresh perspective and much-needed competition.
