Hold on to your hats, football fans! The Kansas City Chiefs are currently leading the Detroit Lions 27-17 in the fourth quarter, but this game has been anything but predictable! Can the Lions pull off a stunning comeback, or will the Chiefs solidify their lead? Let's dive into the details of this Week 6 Sunday Night Football showdown.
Before we get to the current score, let's set the stage. The (2-3) Kansas City Chiefs welcomed the (4-1) Detroit Lions to GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium, each team with a lot on the line. The Lions, despite being without some key players – including cornerbacks D.J. Reed and Terrion Arnold, left tackle Taylor Decker, and several reserve players – were bringing the league's top-ranked scoring offense to Kansas City. Talk about a challenge! They were hungry for their fifth straight win. On the flip side, the Chiefs were desperate for a victory to even out their record and prevent their season from spiraling into a potential disaster. The pressure was definitely on!
First Quarter:
The Lions won the coin toss and elected to receive. Craig Reynolds returned the opening kickoff to the Detroit 29-yard line. Jahmyr Gibbs, the Lions' dynamic running back, started the offensive drive with a couple of short runs before Jared Goff, the Lions' quarterback, connected with tight end Sam LaPorta for a crucial first down. Gibbs continued to be a workhorse, picking up yardage and setting up another first down at the Kansas City 44. But here's where it gets interesting... the Lions meticulously marched down the field, using a mix of runs and short passes to keep the chains moving.
They even attempted a trick play with running back David Montgomery throwing a pass to Goff, who had lined up as a receiver! The play initially looked like a touchdown, but a penalty wiped it off the board. After a delay of game penalty, the Lions settled for a 28-yard field goal by Jake Bates, taking an early 3-0 lead after a nearly 10-minute opening drive.
The Chiefs responded with Nikko Remigio returning the ensuing kickoff to their own 31-yard line. Isiah Pacheco, the Chiefs' running back, gained a yard on the first play. Then, Patrick Mahomes connected with Travis Kelce for a 16-yard gain. Mahomes then found JuJu Smith-Schuster for a 30-yard completion, putting the Chiefs in scoring position. Pacheco continued to pound the ball, getting the Chiefs inside the 15. But the drive stalled, and the Chiefs faced a fourth-and-3 from the 6-yard line. In a bold move, Coach Reid decided to go for it! Mahomes connected with rookie wide receiver Xavier Worthy for a touchdown! However, Butker missed the extra point, leaving the Chiefs with a narrow 6-3 lead.
The quarter ended with the Lions driving again, Goff connecting with LaPorta for a 26-yard gain to the Kansas City 42. Talk about an action-packed first quarter!
Second Quarter:
The Lions continued their drive into the second quarter, with Montgomery running for 12 yards to the Kansas City 30. After a six-yard run by Montgomery, Goff found Amon-Ra St. Brown for a first down. Then, Goff connected with Jameson Williams for a 22-yard touchdown! Bates' extra point put the Lions back in the lead, 10-6.
The Chiefs responded with Mahomes escaping a sack and finding Hollywood Brown for a big gain to midfield. They then methodically moved the ball downfield, converting a crucial fourth down. Then came a bit of trickery! Mahomes handed off to Pacheco, who tossed it to Worthy, who then pitched it back to Mahomes. The intended pass play didn't materialize, but Mahomes scrambled for a first down. And this is the part most people miss... the Chiefs' offensive line struggled at times, allowing pressure that disrupted several plays. Disaster struck shortly after, as Mahomes had the ball knocked out of his hand. The Chiefs faced a third-and-18! Smith-Schuster almost gained enough for the first down, setting up a fourth-and-1. After a timeout, Mahomes couldn't connect with Worthy, and the Lions took over.
The Lions then drove to midfield, converting a third down with a scramble by Goff. Gibbs continued to be a factor, running for 15 yards to the Kansas City 48. However, the drive stalled, and the Lions were forced to punt.
With just over two minutes left in the half, the Chiefs took over. After a short pass to Pacheco, Brown made an acrobatic catch at the Detroit 42. Mahomes then connected with Kelce for a first down. However, the drive appeared to stall, but a pass interference call against Kelce gave the Chiefs a fresh set of downs at the 18. Mahomes then connected with Kelce to the one-yard line. Seeing a Detroit player offsides, Mahomes took advantage and ran the ball in for an easy touchdown! Butker made the extra point, giving the Chiefs a 13-10 lead.
The Lions got the ball back with 33 seconds remaining. After a couple of short passes, they were forced to punt. Mahomes took a knee to end the half, with the Chiefs leading 13-10.
Third Quarter:
The Chiefs received the second-half kickoff. Brashard Smith made a nine-yard catch, and Pacheco added a nine-yard run. Mahomes then connected with Gray for 19 yards to the Detroit 44. After an incomplete pass, Mahomes found Kelce for 13 yards. Mahomes then scrambled for 11 yards and threw a screen pass to Hunt for 11 more, setting up first-and-goal at the nine. Mahomes then threw a pop pass to Brown for a touchdown! Butker's extra point extended the Chiefs' lead to 20-10.
The Lions responded with a drive into Chiefs territory, but it stalled, and they were forced to punt. The Chiefs then drove to the Detroit 27, but the drive stalled again, and they punted.
The Lions then drove into Kansas City territory, with Montgomery making a 23-yard reception. St. Brown then moved the drive to the Kansas City 46. Another throw to St. Brown gained 11 yards to the 35. The first down saw a third consecutive throw to St. Brown, this time for six yards. On second-and-4 from the 29, Williams took a pop pass to the Chiefs 23. On the final play of the third quarter, Montgomery took a screen pass to the nine-yard line, where the Lions would face third-and-goal to start the fourth.
Fourth Quarter:
The final frame opened with Goff and St. Brown connecting to the five-yard line. On the next play, LaPorta caught a touchdown pass in the back of the end zone! Bates' extra point narrowed the lead to 20-17.
The Chiefs responded with a drive highlighted by a roughing the passer penalty and a 14-yard pass to Worthy. Smith-Schuster moved the ball to the 20. Smith took a pass out of the backfield for eight yards, and Pacheco then set up first-and-goal at the nine-yard line. Pacheco carried to the three-yard line. Mahomes could not find a play on second down. On third-and-goal from the three, Mahomes and Brown connected for their second touchdown of the night! Butker's extra point once again extended the lead to ten points at 27-17.
The Lions' next drive stalled, and they were forced to punt after a sack by Charles Omenihu. Remigio returned the punt to the Detroit 49-yard line, giving the Chiefs excellent field position.
Injuries:
Kareem Hunt went to the medical tent in the third quarter but returned in the fourth. Chris Jones received attention on his elbow in the third quarter but also returned to the game.
Special Teams:
Nikko Remigio had a key 20-yard punt return in the fourth quarter, setting up the Chiefs' drive in Detroit territory.
