British Development League 2026: Teams, Rules, and Highlights (2026)

Get ready for an exciting shake-up in British speedway! Six teams are gearing up to battle it out in the 2026 National Development League (NDL), with a thrilling comeback story stealing the spotlight. Buxton Speedway, a name synonymous with grit and determination, is making its long-awaited return to official competition after an eight-year hiatus. But here's where it gets even more intriguing: they're rebranding as the Bulls, under the leadership of speedway veteran Laurence Rogers. This revival was officially sealed at this week’s British Development meeting, with a track inspection by the Speedway Control Bureau (SCB) on the horizon for their Derbyshire home, Hi-Edge Raceway.

Joining the Bulls in this season’s lineup are the defending champions, Oxford Chargers, alongside seasoned competitors Edinburgh Monarchs Academy, Leicester Lion Cubs, and Middlesbrough Tigers. And in a surprising twist, King’s Lynn Young Stars are switching over from the parallel National Development Trophy (NDT) competition that ran in 2025. This season, the NDL is the sole focus, with teams building squads up to a 42-point limit, featuring seven riders each. The championship will be decided by the league table, with no playoffs, ensuring every race counts.

But here’s where it gets controversial: the regulations for rider averages have seen some significant changes. For instance, riders with both NDL and NDT averages from 2025 will use their NDL average for 2026, while those with only an NDT average will stick with that. Newcomers to the NDL will start with a 2.00 average, down from 3.00 last season—a move that’s sure to spark debate about fairness and opportunity. Riders who averaged under 3.00 in 2025 will carry that forward, with a minimum of 2.00. And this is the part most people miss: the rule allowing teams to include one rider with a Championship average of 4.00-6.00 (if not declared in a higher league) has been scrapped. Now, teams can field multiple riders in this category, provided they stay within the points limit. This could dramatically shift team strategies and dynamics.

Another point of contention is the ‘no facility’ rule for absent riders. For a missing rider in the top five, teams can use either a 3.00 or below Unattached Rider or a rider with an established NDL average of 3.00 or below, adhering to SCB Regulation 013.1.6a. For absent riders ranked 6th or 7th, only a 3.00 or below Unattached Rider is allowed, again subject to the same regulation. These rules, like all NDL regulations, are pending SCB approval.

And here’s a thought-provoking question for you: With these changes, are we leveling the playing field or creating new imbalances? Let us know in the comments!

Lastly, as part of the British Development framework, clubs not competing in the NDL must participate in at least one alternative competition, such as the National League Riders Development Individual, Midland Development League, Northern Junior League, Second Half Open Invitation, or a standalone British Youth Championship Round. This ensures that talent development remains a priority across the board.

So, mark your calendars for the 2026 NDL season, featuring Buxton, Edinburgh, King’s Lynn, Leicester, Middlesbrough, and Oxford. It’s shaping up to be a season of comebacks, controversies, and unforgettable moments. Who will rise to the top? Only time will tell.
